I’m thankful that my work life has two categories that mesh perfectly. Most of my professional work involves creating content for the internet and print publications, and my hands-on and workshop work has me using tools and techniques as part of my rural outdoor life. What I learn with the hands-on side and my trade experience informs into all the content I create.

For 35+ years my professional work has been mostly about creating content for the internet and for print publications. I’m a cabinetmaker, carpenter and stone mason by trade and experience, and I’ve been creating content on these topics and more since 1988. You’ll find my hands-on how-to articles & videos across North America and around the world. Over the last 25 years I’ve been connecting high quality products with people looking for them.

Hands-On Rural Life

The other thing I do is have fun with my small farm on Manitoulin Island, Canada. Mary and I bought this 90 acre piece of farmland and forest in 1985, we built a stone house and outbuildings, and we’re at the tail end of raising five children. We currently do plenty of gardening, we graze beef cattle each summer, cut firewood, fix machinery, build things and live a self-reliant country life on the largest freshwater island in the world.

Steve & Family

I grew up in the suburbs of Toronto, Canada, but when I was 18 I decided to try rural living. It was a good choice. In 1985, after a four year search I found the piece of farmland and forest where my wife, Mary, and I now live as modern homesteaders. We have five children, Robert, Katherine, Joseph, Jacob and Ellie, with six grandchildren now living with a mile radius of our place.
