I'm always on the lookout for good screwdrivers. The world has a lot of screwdrivers in it, and many of them are not very good
0:07
This, so far, the Mega Pro, is the best ratcheting interchangeable screwdriver I've used so far
0:15
I'm going to show you why I think that. The handle has a storage compartment here for bits
0:24
Snaps shut. The handle is very comfortable. There's what they call an overwrap here
0:30
The body of the handle is made of a hard plastic, and then there's this softer, rubbery-ish kind of plastic here for grip
0:38
The top swivels so that when you're driving, it doesn't rotate on your hand
0:45
And then this is the ratcheting mechanism here. That's ratcheting one way, not ratcheting at all, and then ratcheting in the other direction
0:55
So it just works really well. That's the bottom line. The ratcheting action is very fine. That's the first thing I noticed about it, was that it's not a coarse thing. It's quite fine. It's easy to use
1:13
And as I said, when you use it, this cap here is swiveling in your palm, so it's exceptionally comfortable
1:21
What I wanted to know, though, was what's going on inside? How is this thing made
1:26
So, I took a power hacksaw, and I cut one apart. And you can see here, this is the bit holder that slides into the handle
1:37
I cut progressively further down the driver until I got to something interesting
1:43
So, here we have this part, and towards the nose of the driver, it starts to get more metallic inside
1:53
What I was really interested in finding out about was how the ratchet mechanism worked
1:59
And this is what it is here. There are these pieces of metal here, and depending on which one is pressed down by the rotating cap
2:13
you either have one or the other engaged with the splines inside
2:20
It's actually more heavy duty than I thought. And when you take it apart, here you can find..
2:29
It's kind of hard to get off now. Here we go. This is a very important part of the ratchet
2:37
It looks just like a small piece of fairly thin metal, but it's actually hardened
2:44
I mean, the file will mark it, but it's not like a piece of mild steel
2:49
This is hardened to some extent, and interlocks with the splines here, the drive mechanism
2:58
to actually make the ratcheting happen. It's quite a heavy duty arrangement
3:04
As I said, I was more impressed after I cut it apart than before
3:10
These are made in North America, when I say that. The line has different models, and some of them are made in the U.S.
3:19
some of them are made in Canada. The head office is in Vancouver
3:24
And it's just a pretty impressive screwdriver, and as I said, it's currently my favorite ratcheting driver
3:30
I've never seen anything that works quite as well as this
