In this video, I want to talk to you about the five main types of table saws
0:05
I'm going to be going into more detail later on in the course, but for now I just want to give you a foundation so you understand what's out there and you can make a better choice as a result
0:16
So like I said, there's five types, there's bench top, there's contractor, there are cabinet saws, hybrid saws, and industrial sized table saws
0:27
So let's take a quick look at the bench top. top. So that's what you see here. This is one of my bench top saws. And as the name suggests
0:36
it's small and portable. No one really uses them on a bench, but you could use it on some
0:42
saw horses or in the tailgate of a truck. Some bench top saws come with folding stands. Others
0:50
you can get folding stands for them as an accessory. So it's really about portability, too. Now
0:58
before I go on, I should say that bench top saws are surprisingly powerful
1:03
With the right blade, so a thin, curved blade that's sharp, you can easily saw through two-inch thick hardwood with one of these
1:11
So power or lack of power is not really the issue you might think it is
1:17
On the downside, naturally, if the bench top saws are small, then they're not going to have the surface area that a larger saw would have for holding work
1:28
pieces, large work pieces. Now that's often not an issue, but if it is an issue, you can use
1:36
a roller stand, you can build an outfeed table. In fact, I've built entire kitchen cabinet
1:43
sets using bench top saws that fit into a site outfeed system So they really surprisingly useful but only if you really need portability
1:58
and if you intend to use your saw outside the shop. If that's not the case, if you're thinking, well, I'm going to be using it in the shop a fair amount
2:08
then you might want to consider the second saw on the list, which is the contract
2:14
saw. Now, technically, this kind of saw is portable, but not nearly as portable as a bench top saw
2:23
There's an open stand, as you can see here, and these units are quite a bit heavier than a portable
2:31
bench top saw. The unit here has quite a large table area, so there's the table itself
2:39
which is bigger than a bench top saw, and in this particular photo there's a side
2:44
wing so you can rip quite wide pieces of wood using a saw like this. I think it's, the best way to
2:52
think of it is if you're going to be doing most of your work inside a workshop space somewhere
2:59
with maybe the need to do a little bit of work outside, then a contractor saw could be for you
3:06
They actually offer pretty good value, even for people who don't want to move their saw doors
3:12
you're going to get somewhat more power, a lot more space than a bench top saw
3:19
and more solidity because they're a heavier unit. It's more like a cabinet-grade saw
3:26
although not quite there yet. One thing to worry about, though, one thing to notice is dust collection
3:34
I a big fan of dust collection and once upon a time there were no contractor saws that you could connect to a dust collector And that because they kind of open
3:46
There was nothing to contain the dust, nothing to contain the vacuum action
3:50
But that's changed. There's a number of contractor saws that come ready to hook up to dust collection
3:57
And then others have accessory packages you can get to kind of enclose the bottom sufficiently
4:03
for dust collection. So now we come to the cabinet saws. This is the model that you'd want to choose
4:11
if you're a serious hobbyist or even a professional, and you have no intention of moving this thing around
4:17
or using it in another space because it's strictly stationary. You're not going to be moving it easily
4:23
Although you can get mobile bases for cabinet saws so you can shuffle it around in your shop a little bit
4:29
to make more room when you need to have some for other operations or if you want to do a really good deep cleaning of your shop
4:37
you can wheel the cabinets saw out of the way. They're heavy
4:42
They're large. There's a lot of accessories available for them, infeed tables, side tables
4:49
aftermarket fences. This is the kind of saw that you could build a professional career around if you want
4:56
Many cabinet makers that I know use saws like this. generally they're about three horse power, so plenty of power
5:04
Power is not an issue with any of these saws, any of the cabinet models
5:09
And it's just, if you're serious about cabinet work and precision, then a cabinet saw is probably for you
5:18
But there is another version, and it's called the hybrid saw. And that what you see here It kind of a combination between a cabinet saw and a contractor saw So you could think of it maybe as an extra heavy duty contractor saw And if you look here at the photo there some wheels
5:37
already built right in so you can wheel it around in your shop easily enough. You could take it on a
5:42
job site, but it's going to be heavier than a regular contractor saw. So I don't, you know
5:48
if you're going to be moving this thing around, hybrid saw probably isn't
5:53
the way to go. But maybe you feel you don't really need a full-blown cabinet saw, but you want
5:58
something as close as you can get to it, then a hybrid saw is certainly worth looking at
6:05
And finally, there's the industrial saw. And chances are you're not interested in one of these
6:11
if you're taking a course on table saws and you want to learn about the basics and how to
6:15
adjust them and such. Because these are very large machines. They cost a whole lot of money
6:22
They're wonderfully effective, though, especially if you've got large sheet goods to cut
6:29
Now, the model that you see here includes a really large sliding table
6:36
which is just a dream to work with if you're cutting sheet goods
6:40
It's faster than cutting against the fence, especially if you're cross-cutting wide pieces of wood
6:47
But like I said, I only mentioned it because it is one of the types. probably not what you're interested in, but if you ever get a chance to use one
6:55
take that chance because it's a marvelous experience for what this machine is designed for
7:03
So just to sum up, we've got five table saws, there's bench top, there's contractor, cabinet saws, hybrids, and the industrial-sized saws
7:13
But like I said, I'm going to be going into more detail about these later
