In this video I want to show you a little trick for making any bandsaw blade work better
0:05
And it has to do with dressing the back edge of the blade. Now, I've got a wide blade in here
0:12
But this technique I'm going to show you applies to all kinds of blades and it's all about
0:18
rounding the back corners of the blade Now you can't see this here, but the back edge of a blade as it comes from the factory is just square
0:25
It's kind of you know sheet metal thickness, and it's got a square back edge
0:30
Now when you're making, when you're cutting curves, and you can cut curves with wide blade, with a wide blade like this
0:37
Just not really tight curves But whenever you're cutting any kind of a curve, if this back corner here or the one on the other side is
0:45
sharp and angular as it comes from the factory, then that sharp edge is going to
0:50
drag on the wood as the blade passes through at a curve. So the little trick is just to take
0:58
some abrasive thing, like this is a diamond abrasive here, you could also use a sharpening stone, and to just hold it
1:06
against the back of the blade like this and move it back and forth and round it while it's running
1:11
So I'm going to show you what that looks like now Now of course you had to keep your fingers away from the teeth
1:18
but this is pretty safe operation and It still makes sense to put safety glasses on, but this is what it looks like
1:27
So As you can see that didn't take long
1:52
I just moved the abrasive in a smooth sort of curved shape
1:56
Around the back edge of the blade as it was running I only need to do that once for any given blade because that back edge is still going to stay rounded and
2:04
It's all going to result in a somewhat smoother cut when you do some curves
