In this video I want to show you how to use a bandsaw to rough cut
0:06
curved things that are fairly thick and I've got a couple of examples here
0:11
All of these are things I've made or started to make or I think my boys started on this one
0:17
I made this a long time ago back in 1986 in fact
0:22
all of these started off as as Rectangular chunks of wood of the sufficient thickness and
0:31
Of course now there they don't have any flat sides or or angular corners and the bandsaw can really speed up the process of going from that big chunk of wood
0:45
to something rough That's more or less shaped the way you want that you then use chisels and sandpaper and files and whatnot
0:53
To get the shape you want, but essentially the bandsaw is going to get you to that fun part a lot sooner and
1:01
That's what I'm going to show you in this video now I'm going to take you back in time
1:06
I was working with my daughter who when she was growing up really had no interest in woodworking and now she can't get enough
1:11
of it. She also likes to make antique shoes from scratch and antique shoes are made around a wooden form and the wooden form is called a last and
1:23
In what you see coming up right now is is us cutting the last which is kind of like a form something like a
1:31
decoy or something except it's shaped like a shoe and The bandsaw is super useful for that in ways you might not expect so let's take a look here
1:42
I'm making the first cut in some cherry that will form this shoe last the form of the shoe
1:48
I'm cutting through a lot of wood here. I am just using a quarter inch blade
1:53
But it's working quite. Well just the same later on in the process I'm using the bandsaw kind of freehand in a way just to remove large chunks of rough wood before actual
2:04
carving and shaping So here's another freehanded carving cut I call it the quarter inch blade is actually perfect for this
2:14
The guide of course needs to be raised so that the workpiece can go underneath
2:18
So you want to keep your fingers well away from things But it's kind of like a hot hot knife through butter and here you can see the finished last
2:28
It's been refined with some carving chisels and some rasps and some some rotary rasps as well
2:34
Something like this doesn't need to be super smooth because it's just a form around which leather is built to make the shoe
2:41
But the bandsaw did certainly come in handy Roughing that out and getting a rid of a lot of the extra wood before we got into the finer operations
