About 10 years ago I became aware of a new kind of cleaning chemistry to replace old school bleaches
0:07
It was oxygen based and a bunch of different companies came out with their version of it and I was pretty impressed
0:13
It worked very well and it wasn't toxic in any way. So those first wave of oxygen based cleaners were based on a powder
0:24
Something like this here. I've used this before. It's called Mold Stain Eraser
0:30
You can see the powder here kind of looks like laundry detergent
0:35
You dissolve it in water. It takes a little while, 10 or 15 or 20 minutes to dissolve
0:41
Then you just put it on the stained surface. This has worked very well in the past but there's a new family, a new generation of oxygen based cleaners that are easier to use
0:53
And actually a little bit more effective and that's what I want to show you now
0:57
The next generation of oxygen based cleaners that I've found have two liquid parts that work together
1:03
This is called Dual Blast. It's the latest that I've found and the most effective too
1:10
And it comes with a jug. It comes in a jug that is divided right down the middle
1:16
So there's no dissolving powder. You just tip it up this way so that both sides of the jug are on each side of the opening
1:26
And you just pour some in. Equal parts come out and it's pretty well self mixing
1:33
You might want to slosh it around a little bit but that product is now ready to go
1:38
And I want to show you how it works on some of this weathered wood
1:44
There's grey weathering here. There's some mildew. There might be some mold
1:48
And I'm always surprised at how well these kind of oxygen based cleaners work
1:54
They brighten the wood but they also don't remove the natural wood green patterns
2:01
So in a sense not only are they safer than bleach but these oxygen based products actually do a better job
2:08
Now the nice thing about these products is that they revert to water and oxygen after a period of time
2:15
So you have a couple of hours to use it and you can see it foaming up there
2:21
That's releasing some of the oxygen compounds. And it takes a little while for this to work but you can see that it is working
2:32
And it is completely safe. I mean you can brush it on. There's no burning. There's no issues at all
2:38
You just have to get this stuff on within that two hour period of time
2:45
Because after that it's kind of like Cinderella. Her carriage is going to turn to a pumpkin and this stuff is going to turn to oxygen and water
2:56
Which is what you want. I mean there's nothing harmful about that. You do have that window of time where you have to get the job done
3:04
I'm just going to let that sit for a while and then we'll come back a little bit later
3:09
Hose it off and you'll be able to see the difference that it makes
3:14
So here you can see the results. Earlier in the video it was morning when I brushed this stuff on
3:20
And I've left it all morning long. It's now after lunch. I've been going about my business and come back and this is the result
3:28
There's no scrubbing here. This is just a natural reaction of the dual blast to this grey weathered wood
3:36
There's still a little bit of discoloration here but it's mostly gone
3:41
And you'll see that the knots still retain their colour. And you can still see the wood grain here
3:48
Which is not something that you see with bleach. It just makes everything a whole lot lighter in a bland sort of way
3:55
There you have it. Oxygen based cleaners at their best
