In this video, I want to explain how to have a porch lift installed at your place
0:08
There are only four steps, but it really will help you to understand the process
0:13
So step one, pretty obvious, you have to decide if you really want a porch lift
0:18
The only other alternative would be a ramp. A ramp's not going to save you any money, really
0:25
It would cost a lot and you have to pay someone to build the thing. Some people prefer a ramp because it's not a mechanical thing, so they feel maybe it's more reliable
0:37
But certainly there's a lot to be said for a porch lift, and more and more people are choosing them, in fact
0:45
Now, step two involves deciding on a local supplier. That's the thing about porch lifts is that they're always provided locally because they're pretty heavy
0:57
So dealers set up to service their individual area because a truck's going to have to come around eventually and set this lift in place and they can't be driving all across the country to make that happen
1:09
So you'll want to start by Googling porch lifts and then stick in the city where you live or the nearest city or the town where you live
1:19
So porch lifts Toronto, porch lifts Seattle, something like that. almost certainly a lot of options are going to come up because it a pretty popular topic especially nowadays as the population ages So you want to call three suppliers or so and explain your situation
1:40
They're going to make recommendations on the particular models that they stock
1:44
When you call the suppliers, you're going to need to give them two pieces of information
1:49
One is the distance that you want the lift to rise. So what is it, two feet, three feet, four feet, whatever that is
1:58
It doesn't have to be exact. It just gives them an idea. You're also going to have to tell them what sort of area you have for the lift to sit on
2:08
That's usually much less of an issue. The supplier might ask for some photos of the area just so they can orient themselves a bit
2:17
Next, you're going to want to ask for a site visit and an assessment
2:22
Any reputable dealer is going to ask for that anyway because they don't want any surprises
2:27
They want to come out and find that everything is as they expect it to be
2:31
and that a lift can in fact be installed in that spot. So ask for and expect a visit and an assessment
2:39
Now, as you finish up your discussion on the phone, at this stage, you haven't decided who you're going to go with
2:46
You want to ask for and check references. Now, very few of the suppliers you talk to are going to be actually making the lift
2:55
They just sell the lift and install. it So the quality of the lift usually doesn have anything to do with the supplier but how that supplier treats their customers that is something you want some information on and some background reference checks will help you with that So ask for three references from previous customers and then follow them up
3:18
That's pretty important. And finally decide on a supplier. So once everything checks out, you've settled on a price, choose your supplier
3:29
You should know too that, and your supplier should explain this. But government help is available for this sort of thing
3:37
And it depends on where you live. Where I live, there's a provincial government in Canada
3:44
that provides some tax relief to help compensate for the cost of these things
3:50
There's also tax benefits offered by the federal government. So I think you'll find the same thing
3:58
There's state or provincial programs and then federal programs. programs. In my experience, you put these programs together and they can pay for, you know
4:10
at least one-third and sometimes one-half of the cost of the lift. So well worth looking into
4:18
The third parameter is to have the site prepared and you'll want to follow the recommendations of the
4:26
supplier that you've decided on. But usually what this comes down to is two things. First of all
4:31
there's the foundation that the lift will sit on, and then the wiring that will bring electricity to the lift So if you got just dirt on the ground you need to find someone to pour a pad a concrete pad there They usually want it pretty thick so maybe six inches or so of the correct size and in the right location
4:52
And then you'll also have to contact an electrician to bring power, usually within about 10 feet of where the lift is
5:02
The lift comes with cables that will connect to that spot. that spot so you don't have to bring the electricity right to where the lift is but but pretty close
5:13
and that's really essentially it once you have the site prepared then you can have the lift delivered
5:22
that's step four and a truck is going to come with some kind of a hoist or a boom and it's going to
5:31
lower that lift in place and then they're going to make the electrical connections and test it out
5:36
It'll need a little adjusting because these lifts work. They stop and start automatically at the different levels
5:43
So they're going to want to test it out and make the necessary adjustments
5:47
so that the lift stops at just the right point when they get to the top end
5:53
And that's pretty well it. It's a great, lifts are a great option for people who don't want to ramp
6:02
Many houses can't accommodate a ramp either. They just don't have the room. So this is where the Porsche lift comes in
6:08
It's a tried and trude technology, quite reliable, and I think you'll find that it'll make a very big difference for you
