In this video I want to explain to you about the tools for digging post holes
0:06
So this is the kind of stuff you'd use if you're boring a hole for a cardboard form tube
0:14
or if you're setting some posts in the ground without some sort of form tube
0:20
The main tool that makes the job a lot easier is this gas-powered post hole auger
0:27
It's meant to be used by two people, so that's why there's handles on both sides
0:32
But essentially, it's just a great big drill bit and it augers through the soil
0:39
Simple enough, and I'm going to show you how it works. Now I'm not going to drill a full depth hole, but I'll just show you how it works
0:47
And then how to use these other tools too. You probably need this one, this scoop, and you may need this pry bar as well
0:57
So I'll just get the auger fired up here and show you how it works
1:03
So starting a rig like this is similar to starting all small engines
1:07
You want to make sure the ignition is on. That's the off position there
1:11
On. This one has a little priming bulb in here. Press that repeatedly and it kind of squirts a little bit of fuel into the carburetor
1:46
Now as I said, I'm not going to go down full depth because you get the idea
2:07
This tool is very useful for cleaning out the hole. You can see the hole cleans pretty well on its own
2:15
But to get full depth, you'll want to finish the augering. And then you use this, this clam shell scoop
2:27
I'm just going to clean out the bottom of the hole. You can dig a hole, a complete post hole with this if you want to
2:35
but I just use it as an accessory to help me clean things out
2:40
Now this particular ground has stones in it. And you'll know you've hit a stone with the auger because there'll be this thunk, thunk, thunk
2:51
And you'll feel the machine kind of hitting the stone and jiggling around
2:56
Now that may be a very bad thing or it may not be too bad
3:00
Most of the stones in this ground are fairly small. So if I hit the edge of one, I can go in with this pry bar and kind of find it
3:09
and pry it and loosen it and then pull it out with another scoop
3:13
So try this method. And if the stone is too big, if it's bigger than the hole
3:18
or even if it's just a little part of it showing, but it looks like it's some sort of a big stone to one side
3:24
then you're going to have to drill in another spot. Either that or dig a much larger hole so that you can get that stone out
3:32
so you can go down to the depths you need. Well, that's it. That's the process in a nutshell
3:37
And as I said, any deck worth building, in my opinion, needs a below-ground foundation
3:44
And these are the tools to let you do that
