If you buy a home that’s on the older side, then maybe it’s what people call a “fixer upper.” You may also hear the seller use a term like “handyman’s dream.” It probably means you will have plenty of DIY projects if you purchase this home, or you can hire someone else to do them for you.

If you get one of these older homes, that might suit you perfectly, especially if you can snag the property for a lower price tag than what you’d pay for a newer one in better condition. If you get one of these older homes, then you can probably consider a long list of projects that can improve it and increase its resale value.

Let’s talk about some of those projects right now.

Finishing the Basement

You may think about hiring a basement contractor, Arvada, CO homeowners, if you have an unfinished basement and a little extra cash to spend. Finishing a basement might involve an expenditure of a few thousand dollars, but probably not much more than that.

You can pay a contractor to install carpeting in the basement. You might buy a large TV and some furniture and put it down there as well if you want to use that space as a den or rumpus room.

You might set up a bar down there. You may purchase a pool table and a dart board as well. Maybe you’d prefer to have a ping pong table instead.

You and your friends should enjoy that space. You can even section off part of the basement and create a spare bedroom. If you like to have lots of family members over for the holidays, this move makes a lot of sense.

Installing a Fence Around the Front Yard

Maybe you bought a house with a large front yard. If you have kids or a dog, then you might look for a home that has a little bit of property. Your children and pets can run around out there and get some exercise when you have nice weather.

Perhaps you notice that your front yard doesn’t have a fence around it, though. You can pay a company and they can install one.

This should also not cost very much, especially if you only buy sections of chain link fence. The yard might only cost you a couple of thousand dollars to fence off if you go this route.

However, you can always pay more and get more expensive fencing material. You might buy sections of wooden or vinyl fence.

Either one will cost more, but you get a sturdier barrier. Also, no one can see into the yard as easily. If you’d like a little privacy, you may feel that’s your best option.

Installing a Deck in the Backyard and a Fence Surrounding It

You might install a deck in your backyard if you have the space for it and don’t have one yet. If your backyard didn’t have a fence when you moved in, you can ask a contractor to install one of those as well.

Much like fencing in the front yard, you’ll probably pay less if you get chain link. However, if you want more privacy for yourself, your kids, and whoever else you invite over, then you can go with a different material.

The cost of the deck might prohibit some homeowners from jumping into that type of a project, at least not right after you bought the property. After you buy a home, it makes sense that you’d have “cash poor” status for a while. In time, once you’ve saved up a bit of a nest egg, you might tackle the backyard deck and fence project.

Installing Window Boxes

Maybe you’d like a cheaper way to increase your home’s curb appeal. If so, then installing some flower boxes under your windows might work.

Installing such boxes might cost a few hundred dollars. You must also purchase flowers that you like and that will do well in your particular climate.

Installing Either Working or Decorative Shutters

If you are still thinking about relatively cheap home improvement projects, or possibly ones that you might handle yourself, you might install either working or decorative shutters on your windows.

Decorative shutters serve no practical purpose, but they can add a splash of color that perhaps your home lacks. As for working shutters, they can protect your windows if your region sees some violent storms sometimes.
