Black iron pipe is a great material for making railings, roll cages, frames and more, the trick is getting the ends to fit well with the sides of neighbouring pipes. Sometimes also called Schedule 40 pipe, and available as galvanized versions, the ability to make curved ends notched so they fit tightly with adjoining pipes is key. The video above shows a simple tool called a tubing notcher in action. It can be used on all kinds of steel pipe plus thinner-wall stuff called “steel tubing”.
