When our oldest, Robert, was 18, he decided he wanted to spend an extended time at a monastery. He chose Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina, USA and lived there like a monk for a month, doing all the usual monk stuff, as well as growing specialty mushrooms. The monastery is self funding. Growing and distributing these mushrooms is how they make ends meet financially. Robert made the video above documenting how the monks grow their famous mushrooms. I think you’ll find it interesting.
