The purpose of this video is to give you a little concept that will help you to lay out a kitchen in your basement
0:07
if that's what you're going to do. Of course this concept can work anywhere you're laying out a kitchen
0:13
And it has to do with a triangular pattern that's found in most kitchens that are easy to use
0:19
So imagine you've got a corner situation, a fridge, this is the range here, and the sink
0:27
So these all want to be close together, and putting them in a triangular pattern helps to minimize the amount of walking that you do
0:35
And that's really what this layout exercise is all about. So when you take the length of distance A, and you add distance B, and you add distance C to it
0:47
you should be looking at about 19 to 21 feet. Any more than this, and you're going to be walking unnecessarily
0:56
and any less, these items are going to be too close together, and there won't be sufficient counter space between them
1:04
So keep that in mind as you do your work. Now if you want more counter space while still preserving this ratio
1:12
the best way to get it is with an island or a peninsula of some kind
1:18
That will give you the counter space without interfering with this triangular pattern
1:23
Now if you do build an island, I strongly recommend you go to the trouble of running a circuit through the floor of your basement
1:33
so that you can have power coming right up in the island
1:39
So there could be an outlet on the side here, a couple of outlets, there could be some outlets here
1:45
Cutting a hole in the concrete early on in the process is not that big of a deal
1:51
You'd want to lay that circuit with a cable that's meant for use underground
1:59
and you'd want to poke it down in this slot, you know, three or four inches, and then replace the concrete
2:08
Or just fill the slot with some floor leveling compound. I mean, you don't even necessarily have to mix up mortar
2:15
You could just pour in some floor leveling compound just to seal it up before you go to all the trouble of putting a subfloor down, a finished floor, and things like that
2:24
But an island is a lot more useful if it has power going to it
2:29
So that's just one thing to keep in mind as you're laying out your kitchen
