So here at my place we cut a lot of firewood and we use chainsaws a lot
0:04
We've got a bunch of big saws like this and that's what we've been using for
0:10
years but I've noticed that with the improvement in cordless tool batteries
0:15
companies are coming out now with cordless chainsaws and I just want us to
0:21
see how this Milwaukee cordless 18-fold compares with one of my favorite saws
0:28
This big Bruiser right here. Now I know a little saw like this is not going to be able to compete with a saw like this that has a 68cc engine
0:38
But I just want to see how close it comes and what it's like to actually use a saw like this for cutting serious firewood
0:45
This pile of logs behind us is all hard maple. We're working it up for our winter's fuel supply
0:52
And I'm going to cut a bunch of those logs with this saw
0:56
I just want to note how long it takes to run down the battery and just give you a report on what using this kind of technology is all about
1:05
Before I get started cutting I just want to show you a few things here
1:09
What the designers of this Milwaukee have done is to make their chain quite a bit narrower than other chainsaws
1:17
So it's chewing up less wood. If you look here you can see how narrow that is compared with the width of this big saw here
1:27
So this is chewing up more wood but I really don't care about that
1:31
I just care about getting the log cut. So that narrowness is going to be an advantage for this saw and it's not going to be a disadvantage for me
1:40
The battery clips in like this. It's a 12 amp hour battery which that's as big as batteries get pretty well here in the cordless tool world
1:51
So I'm hoping it lasts a long time. Of course it doesn't have a place to put gas which would be kind of around here in a regular saw
1:59
But there is a reservoir for putting chain oil in just like with a regular saw because you have to lubricate the chain
2:07
It's also got a chain break. So if the saw kicks up this break stops that chain from spinning immediately
2:15
So it's just like a regular chainsaw that way. There's a button here
2:19
You have to press and hold it and then... That's how it works
2:26
So let me start by making a couple of cuts with my regular gas saw
2:31
Both of these chains are sharp so it's a fair comparison. And you can just get a sense of how fast the big gas saw works first
3:35
There we go. Well I've done some cutting with the saw and to be honest I'm quite surprised
4:10
I've cut all this wood on one charge with the 12 amp hour battery
4:15
As I said before this is all hard maple and the logs are kind of on the dry side too which makes cutting even more difficult
4:22
Speed wise it was surprisingly close to the big gas powered saw I normally use
4:29
I'm not saying that a cordless saw like this is going to take over from lumberjacks or anything like that
4:34
But for a lot of cutting that most people are going to do this is going to work quite well
4:41
And all in all I'm surprised and impressed
