I used to use regular latex medical gloves for dirty jobs in the shop. Then I found something way better. So you've got chainsaws and is that clean X-boxes here
0:04
No, they're not clean X-boxes. These are some rougher gloves, and I want to talk about these
0:11
I'm sharpening saws. We're cutting firewood now. We doll these saws pretty quickly, so I'm taking the chains off
0:18
just doing things that expose me to grease and grime and things
0:22
I don't really mind having grease and grime on my hands, but it's easy enough to wash
0:27
but there is the issue of absorption. absorbing toxins through your skin
0:33
And I think there's a concern there. So for the last, I don't know, maybe three, four, five years
0:39
I've kept different kinds of rubber gloves, I'll call them, in stock in the shop here
0:45
And they use them for finishing, or if I have to do some really greasy, oily, oily work on vehicles, stuff like that
0:51
The first rubber gloves I used, disposable gloves, were just the kind that doctors use
0:57
And they're pretty thin. They do the job, but they're not. not all that strong. They work too for if you want to like yank a tooth with a pair of needle
1:04
those pliers, you know, family members had a tooth issue. Okay, I'll keep that in mind
1:09
Well, you kept that in mind, that's what I mean, didn't you? Oh, did I? Did I wear some rubber
1:14
gloves? Maybe you just joked about it. I don't know that. I have extracted teeth from you kids
1:19
Well, that's what I mean. I didn't wear gloves at the time. I didn't wear gloves. But anyway, I'm not the only one. Protective disposable gloves are becoming more more popular. And
1:29
they're getting better because uptoll barely recently we just had to make use with medical type
1:35
gloves which as i said are kind of thin and not really well suited to the job one pair one kind i really
1:41
like are these monkey wrench gloves they they really are uh they're a disposable glove but they're
1:48
actually kind of a work glove and i like them because they're stronger than regular rubber gloves
1:55
They've got a textured surface here, so they're a little easier to grip
2:00
And they just last a long time. They work really well. And although they're disposable, they're not, you don't have to dispose of them right away
2:08
if you buy them large enough. So my hand is not really an extra, extra large hand
2:16
But don be afraid to buy gloves of that size because this is a supposedly extra extra large size And you know I mean it not as tight as some but it still pretty tight and you can still pick up little parts and things
2:33
It looks pretty thick there. Can you give us like a stretching demo? See how resilient it is
2:37
Yeah, I could do that. Well, anyway, extra, extra large means I can take them off, so I don't have to be throwing them out all the time. I don't like to throw out
2:44
If you're throwing out gloves all the time, chances are you're going to be reluctant to put them on all the time when you should be two, because you don't want to waste them
2:51
But let's give it a try. I haven't actually tried to break these
2:56
Torture test here. Oh, well, it did break. But how often are you going to stretch them like that
3:04
I mean, in practical use, I find that they hold up really well
3:09
Let's try another one. on regular dentist or doctor gloves. Yeah, that one's stronger
3:17
Probably the one on the top of dried out a little bit. You could have. It's kind of like an exercise thing
3:26
It took a lot of force, though, to do that. I mean, you do that without even stretching it at all with regular medical gloves
3:32
Yeah, they just pop right off. So my only complaint with disposable gloves is the fact that eventually you have to dispose of them
3:39
and something like this is going to take a long time to bio-degrade
3:46
Like, they estimate it takes about 200 years in a landfill for these to bio-a-grade
3:50
So we don't have to worry about it then, right? Well, we don't. I personally, I want to be on my own personal life
3:57
Yes, that's a good policy. Yes. So, brand new, green monkey, landfill biodegradable disposable gloves
4:08
So is that, like, the same brand? Same brand. Monkey wrench, green monkey
4:13
Yeah, monkey wrench, green monkey. That sounds like the same here. Right. Well, it's from, it's from the same company
4:20
And Watson gloves. They've been making gloves in Canada for more than 100 years
4:25
So I just got these. I don't know anything about them yet
4:29
Let's take it up. Well, they're green. They're green, which is appropriate
4:34
And they're supposed to bio-degrade in landfills in 10 years instead of 200 so now I can see these are thinner These are 8 mil which means 8 1 of an inch thick
4:52
And these are 4 mil. So they're probably not going to be as strong
4:57
But they still feel beefier than probably better than they're better than they're similar
5:04
They are a little stronger. And I did get them, I did get these in. I did get these in the extra, extra large size
5:10
So, I mean, the only thing better than a biodegradable glove is a glove that you don't have to throw out right away at all
5:17
And they're made of something called nitro. Both of these are, actually, nitril and nitril
5:27
That's important to know, because nitrol is a synthetic rubber. And it's stronger than the other kind of gloves
5:37
technology which is latex latex is a natural rubber so they get latex from tree sap
5:44
from rubber trees and they they treat it so that it's instead of being a liquid it's kind
5:50
of a semi-solid the problem with latex is that people fairly frequently develop allergies to it
5:56
not right away necessarily but so if you start wearing rubber gloves for your work around the
6:02
shop and you find that your hands are itchy or you're getting some rash or something like that
6:07
it very well could be the gloves you're using if they're latex
6:11
But nitral is not that kind of a glove. I had a question about our regular dish washing gloves, like the yellow kind
6:20
Are those latex? I don't know. Some of them are. But I think some of them are also some kind of nitral because they're fairly thick
6:28
At least the ones that I've seen are thicker than most latex. This editor has been getting a little allergic reaction on her hands lately washing dishes
6:36
and I kind of think it's to do with... Are these tall enough to do the job
6:42
I mean, for dishwashing? Probably. Fairly long-cut. I don't know what those regular dishwashing gloves are made of
6:48
if it's any different than this or not. Could be. Well, give them a try. Yeah
6:52
Anyway, so I keep a box of these on hand. I find that it just saves me from having to wash particularly gunky stuff off my hands but the main takeaway I think is limiting your exposure to chemicals It not something that you might think of when you too young but the older you get the more precious your health
7:12
becomes, or the more you realize how precious it's been all along. When you only have a few years
7:17
left, do you want to max? Like who? Well, I wasn't going to point fingers, but if I will point fingers
7:24
I hope I have a few years left. We'll see. But anyway, so I'm going to be trying to be
7:30
trying these biodegradable ones now, I'm going to do a little experiment too and put them
7:34
under a rock somewhere in the compost, corner of the compost pile and see how long they're
7:38
last. Check them in 10 years? Check them in 10 years. Because I won't be around then, right
7:42
Yeah, that's true. Yeah, I'll have to check them. Um, so, uh, when it comes to
7:47
gloves for protecting you from chemicals, I know I've used different types of rubber gloves to do
7:52
wood finishing on things. Right. And I've noticed, I think I've used like regular medical, you know
7:57
doctor's gloves for wood finishing before. And maybe I was just rubbing the finish on too hard, but it seemed to me at the time
8:04
like the finish somehow. And I think maybe it was an oil-based thing. I don't remember
8:07
But it seemed like it was wearing through the gloves. And they would eventually rip and break and let finish get in onto my hands
8:15
Yeah, and probably even make it worse than before because now you got finish held against your skin all around the exact
8:20
I guess was it something chemical happening there? Yeah, I think so. Those are probably latex
8:24
You know, I remember when you're doing wood finishing in the shop here, we were in our latex glove mode at the time and besides being thin the gloves you were using could also be
8:34
broken down by the finishing okay well that's what i thought this this stuff is different i mean
8:38
these are made for workshop use right this isn't something for someone in a lab or someone in a
8:44
beautician's office or something like that i mean these are real gloves used by people who do real
8:49
work with with messy stuff well thank you for joining me for this video i hope you sound useful
