So in this video I want to show you how to fix a flat bicycle tire
0:05
Before I became a dad. I didn't realize that one of my primary jobs will be to fix bicycle tires
0:10
I always seem to have ones that I've just fixed or I need to fix
0:16
This one This one exploded when you were out for a ride Robert, right? Yeah, I was pulling Lily in the little
0:25
Bicycle kid attachment. Okay Blue abdomen. Well Just looking at it. Now. I
0:32
Can see that we need to replace more than the tube I mean if you've done this before this is pretty simple and you don't need to watch this video
0:39
But if you've never done it before there are some tricks a
0:43
tire like this has a tube in it, which is an airtight doughnut of rubber
0:50
That holds the air and then the tire goes on top of it now
0:54
Most of the time the problem is just with the tube But clearly we have a problem with the tube and the tire. There's no point in trying to fix this
1:03
Because this this tire is toast. So I'm gonna start the job
1:08
And then I'm gonna get another tire and a tube and I'm gonna put it back together But I'll I'll show you the beginning part of the process
1:14
So we've got the bicycle upside down It's on a surface that won't scratch the seat or the handlebars and the design of this bike is such that there are no cables coming
1:23
Up out of the tops of the handles that would get bent and damaged by resting on the handlebars
1:29
So it's good to put this bicycle upside down Now the wheel is held on
1:35
with an axle and like almost all modern bicycles The the axle here does not
1:43
Loosen and tighten with nuts that pinch the frame some older bikes have that but there's a quick release feature
1:48
Which is this lever here, so right now you can see that that axle is tight in the frame
1:54
I'm gonna release this lever and It extended this end of the axle
2:00
So now it's loose now it can come out and I can pull it out and I will pull it out in a minute
2:05
But before I do that, I have to open up the brake calipers
2:11
the brakes on this bicycle work by by squeezing the sides of the rim with these rubber pads here and
2:18
Although I could get it off now because the tire is soft when I go to put the
2:24
The renewed tire on the tire, of course will be wider than the rim and it won't go in
2:28
So the first job is to open up that caliper and take a look here
2:35
You can see there's a cable That fits into a mechanism See the mechanism here fit like this. I'm just taking it apart
2:45
And that lets the calipers open all the way up so We're in good shape. This is a back tire
2:53
back wheel so there's the chain and the derailleur Mechanism that needs to be dealt with but we're loose now. So my job is to kind of work this out
3:08
Get the chain off the sprockets And There we go
3:25
So Bicycle tires are They're kind of they're not a very tight fit on the rim
3:34
See, I'm taking this off just with my fingers. I'm just pulling up Pulling up the rim. I have a little tire irons. They're like little levers
3:43
For this job, I may need to get them yet. Maybe not. It's coming off pretty good
3:52
Now Naturally, there's no air in this tire. That's why I'm changing it
3:57
If for some reason you do have to change a tire that's still holding air
4:02
You're gonna have to let all the air out because it'll never get off the rim
4:07
Without with any air in it okay, so This is the valve stem. This is where the air goes in and
4:18
In some cases there's a little nut You need to Take off so that you can pull the valve stem out
4:31
So Basically, all of this is bad. So we're gonna need to renew that
4:39
Before I do anything though It's very important that you run your finger around the inside of the rim to make sure there's nothing sharp
4:51
Especially on a spoked bicycle wheel like this because the spokes they fit into this threaded
4:58
piece here Which it which then in turn extends into the rim a little bit
5:04
now I've changed tubes on this tire before and Normally, there's a black
5:13
Strip of rubber that goes all around to protect the tube from these protrusions that black strip of rubber was no good on this one
5:21
So I just replaced it with three or four wraps of electrical tape
5:26
It's just to give it a little bit of a cushion and so that that tube won't get injured
5:33
And also the sides too it's sometimes possible that if a rock was hit or something the sides of the rim can become sharp and
5:40
That can puncture the tube as well, so I don't think I'm gonna find anything like that
5:48
Outside feels good Yeah, it just takes a minute because and and I've run into this before you don't want to put a new tube and tire on
5:56
There and button it all up and put it back together So
6:04
We're ready for the rebuilding stitch the stage now I know I have a tube in stock. I'm gonna go see if I have a tire
6:11
If not, I'm just about to go into town and I'll try to grab a tire if I need to but maybe that won't be necessary
6:18
Well as it turns out I don't have a tire in stock it's kind of too bad this one went bad
6:25
because the tread still really good and it's just the sidewalls are blown out but
6:29
The important thing here is to get the right size. So that's
6:34
26 by 1.95 so 26, that's the number of inches in diameter that the rim is and
6:44
1.95 that's the number of inches that the tire is wide so
6:51
You can get you can tolerate tires that are slightly different width from stock
6:56
But you must get them the right diameter Otherwise, it just won't fit on the rim it either won't go on or it won't stay on if it's too big
7:02
What would be the maximum variance in width that you can tolerate safely, I don't know it sort of depends on the bicycle and
7:10
How the brakes work and you know, if you go wider there could be something there on the frame that rubs up against it
7:18
So, I don't know maybe a quarter of an inch either way or so something like that and when it comes to tubes
7:25
Diameter is crucial. So it's 26 inches again, but you'll notice that this tube can be used in a range of different tire widths
7:33
That's because like I said, it's it's a rubber bag. So it's got some stretch to it. So you can use this
7:38
on tires that are rated from 1.5 to 2.1 inches wide I just hope they have a tire like this in town
7:53
If not, I'll order one online, but like to shop local when I can so on the video
7:58
This will just be like a second later, but it's been a couple of hours, right
8:02
And you have a new tire Are we rolling? Yeah. Oh, okay
8:08
Do you want to start again? No, go ahead. Okay Yes, I've got a new tire
8:13
I'd never make the 22 minute drive into town just to get a bicycle tire But I had a list a town list ready to go. So we just managed to get this in so it's 26
8:22
by 1.95 Some tires Want to spin in a certain direction, let's see if this is one of those kind
8:39
Yes Rotation I Think it would probably be fine either way But the wheel fits in the bicycle like this
8:51
and it goes like this when you're Riding it doesn't it? Yeah, yes, okay, so that means we want to have it this way around
9:04
Now if I had been just changing the tube I Would not have taken the old tire completely off the real nice
9:10
I would have left one side on because to get at the tube All I need to do is open up
9:15
The other side shoehorn the new tube in pull the old one out put the new one in but since I'm changing the tire
9:21
I've got to put I got to put one side on so
9:26
Do that I've got some bicycle tire irons down here Bicycle tires usually earnest snug on the rim as car tires or implement tires
9:41
Usually you can do most of it just with your hands well like that that was pretty easy. Okay
9:47
We're done Well, I can see I can see this training is gonna go to good use and not just for my audience
9:56
But my for my videographer as well Okay a nice new tube
10:02
Hopefully it's not one of those dud tubes. Yeah, I had a dud tube
10:07
Not too long ago. We're getting ready for family walk tire went flat. I thought ah, I've got a fresh tube in stock
10:14
So like the hero I whipped it off about ten minutes later had the new tube been pumped it up
10:21
The rim was fine, there's nothing wrong with the rim just a bad tube right over the box
10:27
So the valve stem has to go in this little hole because of course Valves got to come out in that little hole in the rim there. Can we just see that
10:37
There's the little hole I Pretty easy to put in a tube when it's new because there's no air in it at all
11:13
Is it's gonna get something's going on here? We're coming up to the riskiest part of the operation
11:26
What's that? Well, that's getting the tire fully on the rim Without pinching the tube because if you pinch the tube you can puncture it
11:38
It's very disappointing. You get all this trouble and then the thing still leaks
11:43
It happens If that happens you might get another chance to model patience and calm it
11:52
Yes, I might I think all of your 40 something thousand subscribers are hoping in at least one video or something that you just lose it
12:04
You can have a rant and start kicking and throwing tools. I don't think it's gonna be this time
12:10
I hate living on a railway line road Well I'll keep that in mind. You just keep the camera handy
12:20
Okay, so see we've got the tube in The pinch zone the place that matters is is right where the tire meets the rim. That's where we do not want that tube
12:35
No, it's gonna be it's it's not that if you're you know If I was working on a car tire or motorcycle tire, they fit a lot more tightly. It's much more of a wrestling match
12:46
Than this tractor tire. Well, first of all I've never done a back tractor tire. I've done a front tractor tire, but those ones filled with calcium
12:56
those are kind of meant for the pros, so There we go. We're ready to add some air
13:03
And there's a little trick I want to show you as I pump this up because it's not as straightforward as simply
13:08
Pumping it up with air as you'll see got out your handy pump here. Yep. That's a nice hardwood handle on that pump
13:15
Yeah, it's a nice. It's a nice hand pump. I like it now because these tires can
13:23
They're not that tight on the rim You can kind of get them so that they're they're further in on the rim on one side than the other
13:31
So as we as we add a little air, I'm gonna be keeping my eye on this line here. You see this line
13:37
There's some sort of serrations there and then there's this line I want to equalize that
13:43
around the rim So I'm just gonna give it a little bit of air
13:52
Enough to start inflating it but not so much that I can't move things around
14:00
Well, we're on the topic of adding air What's a good PSI to pump up a bicycle tire to
14:07
The tire will tell you what the maximum is 50 pounds per square inch
14:14
Maximum load 198 pounds so 198 pounds I guess I can't ride anymore. Gee, well, that's just on one tire. Oh, okay
14:23
So you can be like 400 pounds. Are you up around 400 yet? Not yet, but Eddie Hall would have an issue
14:29
Okay, well, yeah, he'd need something with bigger tires Okay Here's what I mean, you see how that that line sticking out there
14:40
Maybe that's almost an eighth of an inch past the rim and then over here
14:44
It's tight to the rim Kind of have to watch for that
14:49
Do a little bit of equalizing some tires are worse than others. Sometimes if you don't get that
14:54
Balanced properly. They'll actually come off the rim This tire is pretty good that way I think it's gonna be alright, but it's just something to watch for check the other side
15:10
Still only have a few psi in the thing Okay, we're only up to 10 psi
15:27
That's fine for now I'm gonna put it on And then we'll top it up later
15:32
So the front tire is easier because you don't have to monkey with the chain But still the chain is no big deal
15:36
And if you remember properly we opened up the calipers of the brakes so that wider tire
15:41
Wider than when the flat one was on can Can work fine. I
15:48
Think it goes like this I Don't either but we'll be the self-correctors we'll figure that out. Well, where we are that's not gonna
16:20
Okay This little thing by the way is for connecting our little bicycle trailer
16:28
For bicycling around kids and things the wake is what it's called
16:34
Now that looks fine Chain goes around there as long as it's lined up
16:40
Now maybe it maybe it's one sprocket off. I'm not sure but it's lined up good enough. It looks good
16:46
So we're still loose, right? The wheels not Wheels not fastened yet
16:52
What we want to do is we want to equalize the space between the tire here and the frame
16:57
And between the tire on the on the other side of the frame. We don't need to get crazy about this just eyeball it
17:02
It looks pretty good Now as I mentioned before This has got a quick release
17:11
arrangement So if there's a lever That tightens up really it sort of shortens the axle and tightens it up now that's about right
17:20
But let me just show you something here. These things are adjustable So you see I can loosen this off on this side and when I
17:29
Push this all the way forward. It's still loose. It's not actually tightening anything
17:33
So what you want to do is you want to have it loose? And then you want to tighten it
17:39
somewhat by hand so that By the time you flip the lever forward all the way there's a good amount of tension on it
17:47
It's not quite enough tension for my liking there. So I'm going to dial in a little bit more
17:55
That's pretty tight looks pretty good Remember I disconnected the cable so that the caliper would open up wider
18:09
I'm Reconnecting the cable Now let's we we may need to adjust this well, that's pretty good
18:20
The pads aren't rubbing. This is a nice true wheel. Sometimes a wheel will develop a wobble a
18:26
Little you know bend in one part of it and that will cause it to hit the pads
18:31
but that's That's perfect So all we need to do now is put some more air in the tire
18:39
You can see we're at 10 psi now or 11 or something like that
18:43
so I'll just Keep pumping 25 psi or so a
19:01
Little too much I Don't think it really matters a whole lot, but I will let out some if you want to let some out
19:08
There's just a little Valve stem in here you press it I
19:24
Think a good tricep workout. Well, not really But Yeah, how long did that take
19:36
Ten minutes or so. Yeah ten minutes of working time. Yeah Ten minutes of working time
19:42
45 minutes of you talking so Do I talk too much No, no, I think people enjoy your talking everyone's always commenting. You have such a soothing voice
19:55
I've learned about bicycle tires and put myself to sleep at the same time. Well, let's see if this thing's gonna work. Okay
20:03
Riding without a helmet not good No hissing yet
