PASTURE MANAGEMENT: Add Seed to Salt Trough to Improve Pasture Quality

  • Video Watch Time = 2 1/2 minutes

We’ve been pasturing beef cattle here on our Manitoulin Island, Canada property since 1987, and I’ve learned that the best pastures have much more growing in them  than just whatever wild plants happen to be there. Productive pastures also have intentionally planted nutritious crop plants that deliver higher levels of protein and better livestock growth.

Watch the video below to see how I add seeds of valuable pasture plants to the free-choice salt provided when the cattle are on pasture. Plants such as trefoil, white clover and alfalfa can all be established in this way. We’re partnering with the cattle to distribute those seed for us. I call this “salt seeding” and it works.
