The whole crew files into the truck in search of this year's Christmas tree
0:10
Well this looks like a good spot to start hunting. We're going to do something here that seems quite extravagant and wasteful but it's not
0:17
We want a ten foot tall tree. We're going to cut down a much taller tree. You get a really nice tree if you cut off the top
0:23
These trees along the edges of the field are a problem. They get in the way
0:27
I need to cut them down anyway and I can use the trunk for firewood too. So it's really a no waste situation
0:32
Win win win. Yep. It's natural trees. It's not a tree farm here
0:36
So they're perfectly imperfect trees. See that taller one? See how thick that top is? Yeah
0:43
How was that little run Allie? Awesome. Part of the Bailey Line Road Fitness Program? No
0:47
I don't know why I did it. Any prospects here? No. All of them are so skinny
0:54
What are your thoughts? College boy? I like the one mom picked
0:58
You always want to cut down trees that are a nuisance or that are in ground that can
1:05
grow trees back again very well. Not too far after this fence, the soil pretty much disappears
1:11
So I really don't like to cut trees from this area of mostly limestone
1:16
Uh oh, Kate is full of burrs. Oh boy. She's gotten into the burrs
1:20
Yes she has. And the only way to get them is to comb them out
1:24
Jake, look at your job when you get home. That one there
1:28
So that's the one we were thinking of originally, right? It's a natural tree
1:32
This is not a farmed tree. It's been pruned every year for 20 years
1:37
I noticed that the choke knob had broken on the saw. I fixed it with a metal one here until I get another one
1:42
Oh, a little bit of wire. Good thinking. Whoa, whoa, whoa, watch out. Awesome
1:46
There it is. This year's Christmas tree. That may be the nicest tree we've ever had. We're back at the house now
1:50
Yeah, it's cutting off a nice square. It's a great hand saw. Hard point, hard point hand saw. There's one other thing I need to do
1:54
We have a cast iron Christmas tree stand and there's a central stand. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
1:57
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:01
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:05
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:16
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:20
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:24
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:28
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:32
I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off. I'm going to cut this off
2:36
I'm going to cut this off. He's Santa and Jordan at that time
2:40
You've got to get that one on a strong branch, Ellie. I'm here on the beams, hanging the pie ornaments
2:50
Well, does that do it, Mom? Are we done? Yeah, that's it
2:56
People might get the mistaken impression that all we do is unbox firewood cutting tools
3:00
and make firewood, and that's not the case. We do happen to be going through a fair amount of that kind of stuff lately
3:06
This is the firewood tool that didn't come with the last shipment
3:13
Sort of like those Russian dolls where one fits inside the other
3:23
Well, that looks serious. It's very serious and beefy. But we'll give this a try
3:28
It grips the log and it lets you roll the log. You can roll it and lift it up a little bit
3:33
That actually could be a really big help. Hitting the ground with a chainsaw is a great way to dull it very quickly
3:39
We'll give this a whirl and let you know what it looks like. So later today we're going to be going out and cutting some firewood using these new tools
3:45
including this Picaroon, and I figured that the sharper I can make this, the better
3:50
It's kind of angular and cross-section, and I'm thinking that if I round it
3:54
and make sure it's needle-sharp, that it's going to sink into the wood more easily
3:59
Just pop it in the vise here. Over the years I've found it helpful to make cases for my files
4:07
It seems a bit overdone maybe, but files get dull faster just bouncing around in a toolbox
4:16
than they do when you actually use them. Just cut some leather, punch the holes, stitch it through with some wax thread
4:22
and it protects the files quite nicely. It's actually bad for a file to go like this
4:28
because the backstroke doesn't do any cutting and it does dull the teeth
4:33
So you only want it in contact with the metal when you're actually on a cutting stroke
4:41
I think that should do a good job. We'll see how it performs
4:45
Before I start using the Picaroon in this log carrier, though, I wanted to put some linseed oil on the handles
4:54
It helps them to last longer and it also helps them to develop a nicer patina
5:00
I like to use a certain kind of linseed oil. This is by a company called All Back
5:05
They make linseed oil paints, actually, which work quite well. All Back linseed oil doesn't have any protein in it
5:11
There's nothing that can promote mold and black staining that regular boiled linseed oil can cause sometimes
5:18
I keep it in this container. It's an accordion container so I can squish out all the air
5:23
Linseed oil hardens in response to oxygen. There's nothing to this, really. You just put it on
5:30
Wood seems really appreciative, I've noticed, of linseed oil. It soaks in well. It protects well. It nourishes. It stops the wood from drying out
5:41
That's pretty well it. You just do this once a year or so on your wooden handle tools
5:45
and they'll last a long time. I'm not going to do the top because I want to show you a little trick
5:50
that I have found very helpful for getting wooden tool handles to stay tight
5:56
or to tighten them once they become loose. This handle is not loose, but I don't want it to get loose
6:01
Linseed oil is actually quite good at protecting metal from rusting. It works better than regular oil because it's an oxidizing oil
6:12
So it hardens. It forms a skin. It holds up quite well on metal
6:18
I'm going to put some on the head of that Picaroon after I've shown you the little trick for locking the head
6:25
This just stops the linseed oil that's on the threads from getting a grip on the lid
6:32
So this Picaroon is brand new. It's got a hardwood wedge in a split to hold the handle tight
6:38
And it is tight. This stuff, Chair Doctor, is a very low-viscosity adhesive that also swells wood
6:45
It's designed for tightening up wooden chairs. But it also is superb at swelling tool handles when they're installed
6:55
and keeping them from shrinking. It's very good at tightening loose handles so you don't have to take it all out
7:03
Unless the handle is really loose, this can serve the purpose. It's going to swell the wood, make it tighter, and then seal it
7:10
I will just put this in the vise like this, let it soak in. We'll start using this tool after lunch
7:15
Besides the fact that heating with firewood can save a lot of money
7:19
it also gives you a chance to get out, get a little exercise. Robert and I have been inside most of the day in front of computer screens
7:25
so we're going to tackle a little wood together, try out some of the tools. This is one of the biggest logs that we ever have to deal with
7:32
About 30 inches in diameter on this side. These log piles are always kind of dangerous as you eat into them
7:38
It frees up other logs to roll and crush you, which hasn't happened to us yet
7:42
With this one, I'm going to test it with the cant hook and see how stable it is
7:46
I think I can pull that down. Cold start here. Forgot to turn the gas on
8:02
That's stable enough that I can cut it in place
8:13
That's not going to roll and crush me, so we'll get the saw going now
8:32
Rather than get that big hydraulic splitter out, we're just going to break these up into manageable chunks
9:03
How does that thing work? Pretty good. I think it's going to take me a little practice
9:08
but it is nice not to have to reach down. You can kind of reach out, pull logs around
9:13
It reminds me of a cormorant's beak. Hey, hey, hey, look at that
9:19
This is that cant hook I unboxed a little while ago. It's for rolling logs and moving them, but this one's also for elevating logs
9:26
so that you can cut right through them. This one's also for elevating logs so that you can cut right through
9:33
without running into the ground. This is a tire inflator that I unboxed last week
9:53
I'm going to let some air out of this tire. You're going to make it flat
9:57
Yeah, flat-ish. I can help you with a knife. Okay, tire's flat
10:05
Pretty much. I mean, it's not flat, flat, but it's not enough
10:09
There's just a little bit of air. Maximum pressure on this tire is 50 psi
10:13
I'm going to pump it up to 40. See how long it takes. You can dial in the desired pressure
10:19
Let's put it up to 40. 7.6 psi in it now. Here we go
10:28
We're coming up on 2 minutes of pumping. We're at 5 minutes now
10:38
Coming up on 7 minutes now. Well, it's almost at 40. Let's see if it shuts down
10:45
40. It was almost exactly 7 minutes. Pretty decent. One thing I'm curious about is
10:52
How much battery that took. It was showing full before, so now we're down one light
10:58
If I had a tire to top up, I would use something like this. If I had access to a compressor
11:03
and I had a nearly flat tire to fill like this, the compressor makes more sense
11:08
The idea here is that you carry it, it's convenient. You can travel with it
